The North Adams Normal School was founded in 1894 and opened in 1897. In 1932 it became the State Teachers College at North Adams and in 1960 it became North Adams State College. It was named Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in 1997.

Majel Smith, daughter of Roy Leon Smith. She is sitting on the terraced lawn on the west side of College Hall. She later graduated from the normal school. The cancellation date is not entirely clear, but was stamped on July 8. The postcard is addressed to "Prof. FF Murcock/State Normal School/City". Correspondence: "Proffessor (sic)/Thinking that you might be/interested in this small/picture. I take the liberty of/sending it to you/Lewis E. Horsfall"

The buildings in the photograph are, left to right, the Principal's House (now Smith House), Taconic Hall (dormitory) and College Hall, now Murdock Hall. Murdock Hall and Smith House were named after the first principal's of the normal school: Frank Fuller Murdock and Roy Leon Smith. The photograph was taken some time after 1903, when Taconic Hall opened. Note the dirt road - Church St. The back is blank.
